What’s the difference between an omnivore and a facultative carnivore?

Facultative carnivores will eat either meat or plants but will typically eat more meat when its available. An omnivore on the other hand can survive on a diet of both meat and plants and will typically consume a balance diet of both.

Interestingly, in order to survive, a facultative carnivore can live on a diet of only plant foods when there’s no meat available. This is due to internal adaptations (as a result of epigenetics) that can obtain most of the necessary nutrients from plant matter. It’s important to note though, that a diet consisting solely of plant matter will not provide all the necessary nutrients that a facultative carnivore needs such as taurine and vitamin D.

If you are going down the vegan or vegetarian path for your pet, supplements need to be your first consideration.

Extra care is needed if you are supplementing with vitamin D because there is a very small difference between what’s needed and what’s toxic for dogs – this is not an issue if your dog is getting their vitamin D requirements from animal products.

Dietary supplements are just that – supplements given in addition to a balanced healthy diet. If your dog is missing nutrients, or the enzymes to convert necessary nutrients, it’s essential to supplement their diets to add back in what they’re missing under guidence of your vet.

Flaxseed oil is well studied in its benefits for the health and wellbeing of our canine family members.
