Flaxseed oil is beneficial for dogs as it is a good source of omega-3 fatty acids. These provide several health benefits for dogs including: promoting healthy skin and coat, reducing inflammation, and supporting cardiovascular health. Omega-3 fatty acids are considered essential because dogs cannot produce them in sufficient quantities on their own and therefore they must obtain them from their diet.

 

Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Flaxseed oil is a rich source of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an omega-3 fatty acid.

 

The abundant ALA (Alpha-linolenic acid) in flaxseed oil has the power to increase your dog’s circulating omega 3 levels which allows their body to convert this to the essential metabolites EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) and DPA>>DHA (Docosapentaenoic acid >> Docosahexaenoic acid) which are required for maintaining optimal health. Some dogs convert better than others but all dogs, especially those with gastrointestinal disorders or sensitivities and allergies to marine-based products, benefit from the addition of these to their diets. Dogs, like humans, can’t make these compounds themselves so they must be obtained through dietary or supplemental sources. Omega-3 fatty acids are known for their anti-inflammatory properties and have been shown to benefit various aspects of canine health, including:

  1. Skin and Coat Health: Omega-3 fatty acids can improve skin health, reduce dryness, flakiness, itching and scratching, and enhance coat quality. Research conducted by Bauer et al. (2012) demonstrated that dietary supplementation with flaxseed oil improved the skin condition of dogs with atopic dermatitis.
  2. Joint Health: Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects that can help manage joint conditions, such as osteoarthritis. A study by Roush et al. (2010) found that dogs with osteoarthritis receiving a diet supplemented with flaxseed oil had improved lameness scores and overall mobility.
  3. Cardiovascular Health: Omega-3 fatty acids may have cardiovascular benefits by reducing blood clotting, improving heart function, cholesterol levels and decreasing inflammation. A study by Bauer et al. (2011) showed that dietary supplementation with flaxseed oil improved certain blood lipid parameters in dogs.
  4. Cognitive Function: Omega-3 fatty acids are crucial for brain health and may support cognitive function in dogs particularly DHA which is formed from ALA and is in demand for growing puppies in brain and retina development. For many animals, DPA is the predominant ALA metabolite in cell membranes and an important reservoir for EPA or DHA synthesis. Studies indicate that dietary supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids (ALA) had positive effects on brain and retina development and a protective effect on the brain in aged dogs.
  5. Digestive Health: Flaxseed Oil can help in maintaining a healthy digestive system and alleviate constipation in dogs.
  6. Immune Support: The anti-inflammatory properties of flaxseed oil can also contribute to a stronger immune system, helping dogs combat various infections and diseases.
